What Hillbilly Music Fans Make Their Voices Known for Country Music Hall of Fame Inductees

Released September 4, 2004

The CMA announced the 2004 Hall of Fame inductees on August 30 during their press conference televised live on CBS and CMT along with this years CMA Award nominations. This year the Hall of Fame will induct Kris Kristofferson and Jim Foglesong. But fans of hillbilly and traditional country music had other ideas in casting their votes.

Since July, fans visiting Hillbilly-Music.com have been making their voices known and casting their votes for who they would like to see inducted into the Country Music's hallowed halls. Not surprisingly, the fans leaned towards the older stars that were a part of an earlier era. The web site itself is basically a tribute to those early pioneers.

Fans cast just short of 1,980 votes and voted for over 200 different artists and groups. The fans votes covered artists from the earlier eras to those who made their marks in the 1960s and 1970s.

The online voting included a couple of tributes by fans in their group voting. Singer / Songwriter Cliff Japhet, one of the earliest performers, was one such person. The over 90 year old Cliff sends frequent emails, helps promote the traditional country music sound and entertains many online conducting music for chapel services and other gatherings. The goodwill he has spread resulted in those he's touched and entertained to show their appreciation in their votes.

Leona Williams, another singer/songwriter was another recipient. A singer who got her start in the 1960s/1970s. Today she sings and entertains fans in Branson, Missouri.

Fans early on were voting for the top vote getters Jean Shepard, Ferlin Husky and the Wilburn Brothers. Late surges were seen for Connie Smith, the Statler Brothers and the Stanley Brothers. Others in the Top 25 were spread pretty evenly during the voting. Such long time stars as Doc Williams of the WWVA Jamboree; Jerry Byrd, the legendary Hawaiian steel guitar player; Slim Whitman, seemingly more popular overseas than in the USA; Sonny James, known for "Young Love" and a long string of hits; and earlier stars who have passed on such as Lulu Belle and Scotty, the popular husband wife team from the WLS National Barn Dance, Elton Britt, RCA Victor recording star; Rose Maddox of the Maddox Brothers and Rose and Grand Ole Opry star, Dottie West. Wanda Jackson, country and rockabilly star, Johnnie and Jack, popular duet act, Brother Oswald, John Lair, of Renfro Valley fame and a part of the WLS National Barn Dance were others receiving votes throughout the voting process. Later in the voting, stars of the 1960s and 1970s such as Skeeter Davis, Dave Dudley and Bobby Bare were nominated by the fans.
