Daniel "Zag" L. Pennel Sr., 84, of Petersburg, passed away Sunday,
April 29, 2007 at the Grant County Nursing Home.
Born April 24, 1923 in Macks Creek, Mo., and was the son of the
late Edward and Anna (Meuller) Pennel. In addition to his parents,
he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Mr. Pennel worked on Radio Stations throughout the southern and eastern United States
all his adult life. He also entertained throughout the United States and recorded
for Columbia records.
Until his retirement in 2004, he worked at WELD radio station as manager and
disc jockey for 45 years. While working at WELD, he had the honor
of being named "Broadcaster of the Year for West Virginia in 1985".
He was a member of the Petersburg First Baptist Church and was a U.S. Army veteran,
serving in the Pacific with Amphibious Engineers for 3 years during World War II.
Surviving is his wife of 61 years, Norma Lauritsen Pennel; one son, Daniel L. Pennel Jr.,
of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; one daughter, Lori Pennel Baker, and husband, Dwight, of
Petersburg; two granddaughters, Jessica Baker Willis and Kristina Marie Baker,
both of Petersburg; one sister, Ilene Bentch, of Macks Creek, Mo.; one brother,
Rev. William Pennel, of Independence, Mo.
