About the Group About The Group A unique group in its time and day. All female. John Lair told Lily May Ledford to put together an all-female band for the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. So, these native Kentuckians got together and formed a group. Their big break came when in June of 1939, the White House invited them to perform their songs for the King and Queen of England. Timeline and Trivia Notes Group Members included: Lily May Ledford, banjo Opal Ambergy, bass fiddle Bertha Ambergy, fiddle Rosy Ledford Susan Ledford, guitar, and youngest of the Ledford sisters
