About The Artist Charlie Monroe was one of the famous Monroe brothers; the others were Birch Monroe and of course, the father of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe. Charlie was born on a farm in Rosine, Kentucky. As you might think, it was a musical family. Charlie's mother was a violin player and they noted that she kept it on her bed and would stop to play a tune or two as she passed through while doing the household chores. Later on, he and his brothers moved up to northwest Indiana to find employment in the industrial areas. In 1927, he and his other two brothers, Bill and Birch, started a radio program in Gary, Indiana. By that time, their father wasn't doing well health-wise, but he did make a two mile trip on horse to hear the show. Shortly after that, he passed away, but had the satisfaction of hearing his sons musical careers get their start. Charlie made a name for himself as a solo act. He was on the RCA Victor label and had hits such as "'Neath a Cold Gray Tomb Of Stone" and "Good Morning To You" and one of his own favorites, "Who's Calling You Sweetheart Tonight?" back in the early 1950s. At one time, he had a 127 acre farm in Beaver Dam, KY and built a new home there in 1943. Charlie married the former Elizabeth Miller in 1936. Credits & Sources
