"Montana Mel" was fronting the "Sunset Pioneers" over WTOL in Toledo, Ohio in 1954, a band he had formed about a year earlier. A 1954 article mentions he had been doing personal appearances and had been a member of various bands in the area in the five years prior to that. A 1953 article tells us he was being heard over the air at WTOL at 7:30pm each Saturday night.
